Synopsis 

The Autobiography of an Ex-Colored Man written by Allison Francis, is a three-act play adaptation that evokes the music, imagery and energy at the turn of the 20th century in America. This play also examines the challenges African Americans faced as they attempted to navigate the politics of tolerance, acceptance and racial passing in the North and in the South.

Ex-Man: bi-racial male/pianist in his 20s
Young Ex-Man: Bi-racial boy, middle school to high school age
Mother/Landlady: Biracial Southern mother to Ex-Man
Father/Millionaire: wealthy, White Southerner male
Red/Waiter: Irish-American male & best friend to Ex-Man
Shiny/President: Ethnic male with a charming smile
The Girl/Widow: White Northern female who sings
Pullman Porter/Gambler: Cunning Ethnic male, 18-25yrs
Kind Porter/Doctor: Friendly Ethnic male in his 20s-early 30s
Boxer/John Brown: Strong Ethnic male in his 20s-early 30s
ENSEMBLE: Students; Teachers; Pianists; Tailors
